Remarkable and historical moment today at the Dynamite Recreational Center, Yenagoa; where the Nigeria Wrestling Federation unveil 16 athletes for the 12th All Africa Games in Rabat, Morocco.
The mouth-watering ceremony which began by 2pm till 4:30pm did showcased the champions in their best outlooks including their newly Wrestling kits. And their swaggering appearance bring the audience to a cheering mood.
Wrestling is obviously a famous Sport in Nigeria and the 52 athletes who began camping since 5th July in Yenagoa, had trained for 6 weeks before the final selection. In addition, they’re champions because it’s Wrestling that has increased medal haul for team Nigeria in almost all the international outing.
Nevertheless, the supposed (26) twenty-six athletes was streamline to (16) sixteen selected best as a result of the All Africa Games organizers who required that the Nigeria Wrestling Federation have to present only Olympic weight class both in the male and female category.
Meanwhile, the athletes will compete in Men Freestyle, Greco Roman and Women wrestling once the event began next week in Morocco. And the Africa showpiece that is schedule for 19th-31st August is going to be intriguing.
According to the Federation President Hon. (Dr.) Daniel Igali, he assured those affected to remain focus and committed to their wrestling careers as there are many championships ahead of them and the possibility of them representing Nigeria is very sure.
Speaking told the Press, “it’s my obligation to create enable environment for them to train and we have competent Coaches, good training center too” he said.
Adding, “My prayer for them is to go and do their best, win maximum medals for Nigerians because everyone is looking up to them” he told.
Igali, expressed dissatisfaction about 2 Coaches accredited for the team instead of 5, “if I have to stay behind for them to be there, I will do that in order for the team to succeed” he added.
He pledged his continuous support for the team and thank everyone who attended the unveiling ceremony.
Furthermore, those selected are: (50kg) Genesis Mercy, Bose Samuel (53kg), Adekurouye Odunayo (57kg), Aminat Adeniyi (62kg), Oborodudu Blessing (68kg), Onyebuchi Blessing (78kg), Ikechukwu Robinson (60kg), Alfred Parkistan (67kg), Nworie Emmanuel (77kg), Okeke Tochukwu (87kg), Wilson Ebikewenimo (57kg), Daniel Amas (65kg), Ogbonna John (74kg), Bibo Melvin (86kg), Suso Tamarau (97kg), Boltic Sinivie (125kg).
In a summary, having won laurels in Africa championships, Commonwealth events, National tournaments, Olympic appearances with their intense training; one can only agree that this athlete has all it take to emerge victorious.
