Akwa Ibom Ex- Super Eagles Players Gets Birthday Car Gift

Friday Ekpo is an ex-Super Eagles player. 50 years old and long retired. Until recently, you’d see him jumping buses or riding an okada to go coach members of UKOD FC Lekki.

Mr. Friday Ekpo was the first and the last to leave the pitch. No airs, no “I am a Nigerian football legend” entitlement mentality. Cash poor but attitude rich. He was coaching men that pay N30,000/month to be part of the team.

Then someone remembered him towards his birthday. The conversation went thus: "this man, he doesn’t have a car. He doesn’t seem like he’s got much. But he is so dedicated to us. He is so humble and never grumbles. We need to do something for his birthday!"

The guys gathered to discuss what they’d do. They decided to buy him a car. One he could put up for Taxify/Uber when he wasn’t driving it himself. The hard part now: getting guys you’d beg and remind over and again to pay their N30k dues to contribute the N1.5m needed for this.

But in the true Nigerian spirit we know we’ve got: these men in three days not only raised more than twice the money, they also raised a substantial amount of money for him to get something started.

Oyo-Ita Returns To Work As President Buhari Rejects Retirement Request

Winifred Oyo-Ita, the head of service of the federation, returned to her desk on Thursday following the rejection of her offer of early retirement by President Muhammadu Buhari.

Oyo-Ita had last weekend sent in her letter directly to the president following pressure mounted on her to quit the job by her sons.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recently questioned Oyo-Ita over allegations that she used front companies to get contracts when she was a permanent secretary before her appointment as head of service by Buhari in 2015.

She vehemently denied involvement in any scam.

Oyo-Ita had been absent from public functions after the EFCC grilling, but she was present on Wednesday at the swearing-in of ministers after meeting with the chief of staff to the president, Abba Kyari.

TheCable learnt that insinuations that she was being victimised did not sit well with Buhari, who eventually turned down her offer to retire.

Calls to Oyo-Ita’s phone did not go through, but one of her associates said she has put the matter behind her and would talk “at the appropriate time”.

Government To Close Down 1, 140 Illegal Schools

The Akwa Ibom State Government says it will close down over 1,140 illegal nursery, primary and secondary schools operating in the state.

Commissioner for Education, Nse Essien, disclosed this in Uyo, the state capital while speaking with journalists on Thursday.

Mr Essien, a professor, said the move by the government was to stem the rising cases of unapproved private schools in the state.

He expressed dismay with the way unscrupulous persons in the state were establishing schools without proper registration with relevant agencies of government.

“These schools are not approved by the Ministry of Education in the state and students are taught under unhygienic conditions where the learning environment is deplorable.

“We have in the ministry the minimum standards which must be fulfilled before opening any school in the state,” Mr Essien said.

He said the ministry was going to publish names of the illegal schools for the public to be aware.

Mr Essien warned that defaulters would be prosecuted by the state government.

“Names of these schools will be published; subsequently, the schools will be closed down.

Mr Essien stressed the importance of E-learning, saying the government was poised to introduce E-learning into the school system as a means of improving and providing quality education to students.

“The world today is evolving with technology. It is moving away from manual processes and we cannot afford to lag behind.

“E-learning will provide accessibility to the students at all times by the teachers even after school hours.

“Missed lessons can be reviewed, students will have access to improved, updated, and world class libraries and learning facilities,” Mr Essien said.

We Don't Have Oyo-ita's Resignation Letter - Presidency

The Presidency on Monday said it was not in possession of any letter by the embattled Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Winifred Oyo-Ita, indicating interest to go on retirement.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, said this in a text message sent to our correspondent in response to earlier reports that Oyo-Ita had formally informed President Muhammadu Buhari of her desire to proceed on retirement.

“Thanks. We have no such letter here, in the event that such a letter exists. This is our position,” he wrote.

Oyo-Ita is currently in the eye of the storm after the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission reportedly questioned her over alleged N3bn bribery, duty tour allowance falsification and fraud case.

EFCC ALLEGATIONS : Oyo- Ita Resigns As Nigeria's Head of Civil Service

Ibom Chronicle can now officially report that Winifred Oyo-Ita, the head of service of the federation, has offered to immediately proceed on retirement in a letter to President Muhammadu Buhari.

The widow had been under pressure from her immediate family to retire after news reports emerged that she was being probed over an alleged N3 billion contract scam.

Although she has vehemently denied involvement in any scam, she bowed to family pressures and sent in a letter on Sunday offering to proceed on retirement.

Buhari is yet to take a final decision on it but our correspondent gathered that he is favourably disposed to the option.

It would be recalled that Oyo Ita was absent at the presidential retreat for ministers-designate, federal permanent secretaries and top government functionaries held at the state house conference centre in Abuja.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) recently questioned Oyo-Ita over allegations that she front companies to get contracts when she was a permanent secretary before her appointment as head of service by Buhari in 2015.

There were insinuations that she was being “punished” for “falling out” with Abba Kyari but our correspondent learnt that the president’s chief of staff was unaware of the EFCC probe until it was leaked to the media.

Oyo-Ita has also told her associates not to drag Kyari into the matter because “it is not true”, according to a family member who spoke with a journalist.

The EFCC said the petition against her was written in 2014 when President Goodluck Jonathan was still in office.

It was also reported that N600 million was traced to the account of one of her aides who has been quizzed by the anti-graft agency and released.

However, Oyo-Ita also denied the allegation, saying the money was meant for the death benefits of staff and was meant to be kept in a designated account for that purpose by the project accountant.

“She denied knowing anything about where the money was kept and said there was no fraud involved, at least not from her end,” the family member said.

Funds Threatens D'Tigers World Cup Dreams

Tigers’ earlier scheduled trip to China in continuation of their preparation for the FIBA World Cup may have suffered a setback over paucity of funds as the Nigeria Basketball Federation continues struggling to make funds available.

This much was made known to journalists at the weekend by the General Manager of the team, Musa Adamu when asked about the team’s plan for the FIBA 2019 World Cup in China.

“I cannot tell you exactly when the team is leaving for China, the basketball federation has been doing a lot for this team. We started this elimination over a year ago and now going to two years and the federation has been funding the trips for each window.

“Each window, we had to bring players, fly them down, accommodate them and also pay insurance and all these things have been done singlehandedly by the federation with a promise from the ministry to support us, but we are still expecting and hoping that they will do so before we leave for China,” Adamu continued.

The former Nigerian international revealed that despite plans to adequately prepare the team for the apex global sports fiesta, the unavailability of funds might just be the clog in the wheel of the team’s preparation.

“The team is here in Nigeria, so we hope that they will act because we don’t know when we will leave. There are no funds available for now. The federation is looking up to the Ministry with the hope that the funds will be released for us to leave”

He took time out to appreciate the Engr. Musa Kida led NBBF board for their selfless sacrifice throughout the qualifiers as he appealed to the President, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari to intervene and save the country from global embarrassment.

“I wish to appreciate the federation, the President, Engr Musa Kida and the board. They have been doing so much for this team and basketball and I think it’s time for government to step in and assist us.”

Adamu revealed that the current players in camp are talented, motivated and ready to represent Nigeria well, but funding has been a major issue.

“I will like to use the forum to call on the President, His Excellency, Muhammadu Buhari to turn his eyes a little bit to the D’Tigers because they are also a national team. We are expecting support from him to release funds for our team to be able to participate in this World Cup.”

Adamu regrettably admitted that the team which became the first country in the world to qualify may end up not participating at the World Cup starting on the 29th of August if funds are not released on time by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Youth and Sports.

“We have come a long way. We have a very good, ambitious and motivated team. We really hope that the President will try to help his children, his people and his own team to be able to participate in this World Cup through the sports ministry obviously”.

Itam Youth Responsible For Darkness In Akwa Ibom - PHED

Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company, PHED, wishes to draw the attention of Security Agencies, Government Functionaries, Electricity users and indeed members of the public that the entire Akwa Ibom state including the state capital has been thrown into unwarranted darkness by the Itam Youth Forum.

The forced outage is sequel to the action of the Youth Development Forum under the leadership of Obong Ubong Akpan who early this morning barricaded Transmission Station, located at Itu near the state capital, thereby forcing the station to shut down supply forcefully.

In addition, the same group later moved to PHED office at 4- Lane with a coffin, a show of shame championed by its leader, dropped the said coffin at the entrance of the office, scared customers away, thereby leading to operations blockade of the company.

The action of the Youth has therefore, led to inability of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, to wheel out power to Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company for onward distribution to its valued customers in Akwa Ibom state.

Also, the economic activities of the entire state have been brought to a halt as a result of the sacking of TCN’s officials on duty by the irate youth.

The action of the youth may have been surreptitious by its leader, Ubong Akpan who has repeatedly demanded for a contract worth N6, 660,000.00 to carry out enumeration on behalf of PHED in his community, Itu, comprising 79 villages.

Of course the management did not succumb to his hate speech and blackmail, hence, he now organized and misled unsuspecting members of his group in order to achieve his self-aggrandizement which he purportedly hinged on poor supply to his community-Itu.

He also submitted a proposal to PHED for sensitization in his community amounting to N731, 200.00 which was declined for lack of merit since there is an- house department responsible for publicity.

Severally, we have met and engaged the community on the value chain in the electricity industry which we exhaustively educated them on its relevance to the sector.

PHED cannot be intimidated or coerced into doing the biddings of “A self-acclaimed-messiah” as we have the mandate of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, to distribute power supply to our customers including Itu community in our franchise area.

We therefore, call on the relevant government functionaries especially the security agencies to step in and advise Ubong Akpan and his group to vacate the premises of the TCN and remove their coffin from PHED’s office in Uyo with a view to wheeling out supply to PHED customers.

John Onyi
Manager, Corporate Communications,
PHED

A'Ibom Government Carpets Buhari' Aid On RUGA Comments

wa Ibom State Government has condemned the RUGA herdsmen statement made at the weekend by the Special Assistant to the President on National Assembly Matters, Senator Ita Enang, blaming it on greed and a desperate quest to cling to power.

In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information Mr Charles Udoh, the State  Government said "traditionally, the comparative advantage of Akwa Ibom State is not in animal husbandry; it is therefore ludicrous and insanely obtuse for Senator Ita Enang to say that the Akwa Ibom state officials are the owners of the cows herded  by the the Fulanis in the State. It is deeply incendiary and inflammatory”.

The Presidential aide had while defending the  now suspended yet controversial RUGA settlement programme of the federal government on a private radio station in the state, claimed that "cows seen in Akwa Ibom State are owned by big men in the state", and that the owners employ the Fulanis to manage the cows for them. He went on to name serving and former Senators, National and State House of Assembly Members, Chairmen of Councils, retired and serving soldiers, party chairmen, elders and leaders in the state, among others as owners of the cows.

"The comments made on a live radio programme; may, on a cursory look sound like another of his lame political gamesmanship but beyond that, it becomes a matter of grave concern when a man of his standing deliberately makes statements capable of heating up the polity in his home state and causing security dilemma and tension.

The state information boss wondered why such a  'vile assertion' should come on the heels of the attack on innocent and defenseless farmers in Mkpat Enin Local Government by gun wielding herdsmen; which left one person dead and several others injured.

Mr Udoh said the action of Senator Enang was fast becoming a pastime, given his "penchant for notoriously launching nauseating attacks on his people in a brazenly desperate attempt to cling selfishly to political relevance."

The statement maintained that "The world is aware of the alarming increase of herdsmen -orchestrated attacks on innocent people which is spreading like wild fire across the country.

"The Government and people of Akwa Ibom State remain undaunted in it’s avowed commitment to ensure maximum security of lives and property in the state. No amount of blackmail will scuttle the peace and prosperity the state has enjoyed in the last four years."

"As a State known for its hospitality and love for visitors, we encourage every law abiding Nigerian to come and live in our State; but they must be law abiding and not engage in acts capable of disrupting the peace and security we enjoy in the State” the  statement concluded.

Court sentences Archibong Eden 7 Years Over 28.2 Million Niara Fraud In Akwa Ibom

Justice Archibong Sends Archibong to Jail over N28m Fraud

Justice Archibong Archibong of the Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Uyo, on Wednesday, August 7, 2019, convicted and sentenced Archibong Effiong Edem to seven years imprisonment over N28, 234, 735 fraud.

The convict was arraigned by the Port Harcourt's Zonal office of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, at a Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, on two-count charges bordering on obtaining by false pretence.  The case was later transferred to an Akwa Ibom State High court, Uyo owing to issues of jurisdiction.

Edem's journey to jail began when a petitioner, Godwin Utumude, alleged that sometime in 2004, in the United States of America, he met the convict who showed him a property in Texas that was up for sale.

According to the petitioner, the prize of the said property was initially $218,000 (Two Hundred and Eighteen Thousand Dollars), but the convict eventually agreed to sell at $200,000 (Two Hundred Thousand Dollars) which was an equivalent of N28, 234, 735 (Twenty Eight Million Two Hundred and Thirty Four Thousand Seven Hundred and Thirty Five Naira) at the time, and on September 1, 2004, he paid N20million to the convict who assured him that by December 2004, all documents regarding change of ownership of the said property would be handed over to him.

To ensure that the necessary change of ownership was perfected,  the petitioner said the convict further requested the balance payment of N8,234,735 which he made on January 17, 2015.

All efforts by the petitioner to get the said documents proved abortive, hence the petition.

In the course of trial, the Commission called three witnesses: Godwin Utumude, the petitioner (PW1); Michael Adukwu,  an operative of the EFCC (PW2) and Chukwuma Ekezie Amadi, Deputy Compliance Officer, Zenith Bank  (PW3).

The EFCC also tendered several documents which were all admitted in evidence.

The documents comprised: A copy of the petition dated November 22, 2016 as exhibit A; a cover page of a document showing the picture of a building as exhibit B; Pages 1 and 2 of a document also showing the building as exhibit B1; Pages 3, 4 and 5 of a document titled: "Seller Disclosure Notice" as exhibit B2, amongst others.

Delivering judgement, the court noted that the prosecution had overwhelmingly established a case of obtaining by false pretence against the defendant through the evidences tendered before the court by the three witnesses.

Justice Archibong said that:  "The prosecution has satisfactorily proved his case beyond reasonable doubt against the accused person to warrant his conviction in counts 1 and 2 of the charge against him. The defendant is hereby found guilty as charged and is accordingly convicted on counts 1 and 2 of the charge".

Before the convict was sentenced, the judge asked him if he had anything to say.

The convict, without showing any remorse, maintained that he never admitted to have collected the said amount: "it is not true that I admitted under cross examination that I collected N28million from the petitioner. I have always told him that I will pay him his money and I will do so if permitted", he said.

At this point, the defence counsel, S. A. Ngbe, prayed the court to tamper justice with mercy on age and health grounds, "consider his age and ailing health. My lord, he is over 70 years of age", he pleaded.

The court immediately sentenced Edem to 7years imprisonment on each of the two counts without an option of fine. The sentence runs concurrently from the date of his conviction.

Justice Archibong also ordered the convict to restitute by paying the petitioner the entire sum which is N28, 234, 735.00.

Benue State Government Convicts 81 Herdsmen, Seize 3,000 Cows

Benue State Govt convicts 81 Herdsmen, seize 3,000 cows

Gov. Samuel Ortom of Benue on Saturday in New York said no fewer than 81 herdsmen had been convicted and 3,000 cows arrested under the state’s anti-open grazing law.

Ortom, who gave the update in a keynote address at the 2019 annual convention of the Idoma Association USA, said implementation of the law had brought relative peace to the state.

“We are implementing our law, and there is relative peace. As at today, we have convicted 81 herdsmen. Some have paid fines; others are still in prison as I talk to you.

“We have gone a step further. Anywhere we see cattle doing open grazing, we go after them. So far, we have arrested over 3,000 cattle.

Herdsmen along with their cows wait for buyers at Kara Cattle Market in Lagos, Nigeria, on April 10, 2019. – Kara cattle market in Agege, Lagos is one of the largest of West Africa receiving thousands of cows weekly due to the massive consumption of meat in Lagos area.
“The law stipulates that within seven days, owners of such cattle should pay fines and reclaim them. We have been collecting fines from them,’’ he said.

While insisting that ranching remained the best solution to the farmers/herders conflict, the governor challenged anyone with a better alternative to bring it forward.

Ortom spoke on the topic, “Security and Economic Challenges in Benue State’’, which was a modification of the theme of the conference that centred on Idoma land.

He said all parts of the state were facing similar development challenges, including insecurity, infrastructural deficit, unemployment, health and sanitation issues, among others, hence his decision to broaden the scope.

The governor said only four of the 23 local government areas in the state, namely Otukpo, Konshisha, Ushongo and Vandeikya, were spared of conflict between locals and herdsmen in the last six years.

“As at today, herdsmen have attacked 19 of the 23 local governments in Benue, claiming over 5,000 lives between 2013 and 2018.

“Over 195,000 homes and 30 churches worth billions of Naira were destroyed in the attacks,’’ Ortom said.

He thanked Idoma people in the U.S. for their support to victims of the Agatu attack in 2016; award of scholarships to Benue students, among others.

The governor also lauded them for being of good conduct, noting that to the best of his knowledge no criminal case or report had been brought against them.

Ortom used the opportunity to brief his hosts on the policies, programmes and projects being executed by the state government under his leadership.
