Otis Optimistic Of FIBA Afrobasket Title Defense

D’Tigress Head Coach, Otis Hughley is confident that his team has chances of successfully defending their FIBA AFROBASKET title when the competition gets underway on August 9, 2019.

Following the team’s draw against Tunisia and Cameroon at the official draw ceremony held in Dakar, Senegal, Otis said the team can mount a strong title defense with the talents at his disposal.

Having led the team to a historic eighth place finish at the 2018 World Cup in Spain, Otis is aware of the buzz already created around D’Tigress ranked number 2 in Africa.

The team will hope to bury the ghost of their 2015 misadventure where they narrowly lost to host-Cameroon 70-71 in the semifinal under Coach Scott Nnaji.

“I know Cameroon has a good history against us. They beat Nigeria in the 2015 semis. At this level, anybody can be beaten any day, so we are taking all the teams as the same. No matter who they are, we are going to play them hard and tough”.

Despite exuding confidence about their chances at the AFROBASKET holding in Dakar, Senegal, Otis cautioned that winning the title for the fourth time will not come cheap.

“It is a round ball, no matter what, it is still going to bounce. We are still going to worry about health and how the chemistry is going to pan out this year because we have not had a lot of time to train together”.

The reigning African Champions went 8 games unbeaten to clinch the 2017 title in Bamako, Mali defeating Senegal, 65-48 points to win the title.

Nigeria (Defending Champions), Senegal (host), Mali and Angola have been tipped as favorites by bookmakers.

Ministerial Appointment: Akwa Ibom APC Foundation Appreciates Buhari, Hails Sen. Akpabio

Ministerial Appointment : Akwa Ibom APC Foundation Appreciates Buhari, Hails Sen. Akpabio

The National Directorate and entire membership of Akwa Ibom APC Foundation heartily felicitate with the immediate-past governor of the state, His Excellency, Distinguished Senator (Dr.) Godswill Obot Akpabio (CON), on his well-deserved nomination by President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, and subsequent successful confirmation by the Senate as Minister Designate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In a press release signed by the group's director general, Dr. Effiong Etuk, and made available to journalists in Uyo, the body note thus "your Excellency, when on the 8th of August, 2018, at Ikot Ekpene Township Stadium, you joined our great party officially, the array of nationalistic leaders and politicians that graced that epochal occasion signalled that as a nationalist, you shall lead the APC in Akwa Ibom state into the national political realm and consciousness.

That event was rightly dubbed "uncommon defection", owing to Your Excellency's uncommonness in political sagacity, party politics and overall leadership. Your entrant into our party heralded a new direction; little wonder the APC became a toast of the misgoverned people of the state in the build up to the 2019 elections.

Notwithstanding the temporary setback occasioned by the worst form of electoral malpractices perpetrated by the Igini-led INEC in concert with the PDP government of Akwa Ibom state, our party's victory is sure.

We are confident that these broad day robberies in the name of elections shall be upturned as they are being vehemently challenged at the elections tribunals.

We must state here, Your Excellency, that your meritorious appointment is a further testimony that your sterling leadership qualities as well as selflessness which made you to relinquish your exalted position as the Senate Minority Leader in pursuit of collective national interest, have not gone unnoticed.

Again, this appointment has shamed the Fifth Columnists and your political adversaries who lately resorted to campaigns of calumny to portray you in bad light, having sensed that you have been penciled down for exaltation given your political pedigree.
Today, we dare say that they have all failed woefully.

While we appreciate Mr. President for finding you fit for this appointment, we have no doubt in our minds that you shall bring to bear your vast wealth of experience that would assist in propelling the APC-led administration to the much desired Next Level of economic prosperity and political stability.

Thank you, Mr. President. Congratulations, our incoming 'Uncommon Minister.

The Chairman of Amaecom Group of companies - Dr Amaechi Marcel Ofomata has challenged the students of University of Nigeria, Nsukka to take their destines into their hands as the era of white collar jobs and dependency on government in Nigeria and perhaps in Africa has long gone.

The Amaecom Chairman who was a Guest Speaker at the 2019 Students’ Entrepreneurship Day organized by Center For Entrepreneurship and Development Research (CEDR), University of Nigeria Nsukka spoke on the theme: “Graduate Self Employment: a veritable tool for nation building”.

Dr Ofomata stressed that recent research, economic and statistical data has positioned Nigeria as the poverty capital of the world with scores of people living in abject poverty, mortality, malnutrition, leading to high crime rate, insecurity, depression/suicide among others but expressed optimism that Entrepreneurs are the ones to safe Nigeria from the economic doldrums.

Pix : Dr. Ofomata delivering his key note address

The Harvard trained entrepreneur observed that every year Nigerian Universities and other higher institutions keep churning out graduates into the labour market with little or no provisions for their immediate engagement towards sustainable livelihood thereby endangering the different indices of development in the country.

The global entrepreneur stated that as the population of Nigerian youths increases, there is strong need for an increment in the number of employer of labour who will create value to improve the living standard of the emerging citizens because government cannot do it alone. He motivated the students to take business decisions that will salvage the economic fortunes of the country.

Dr Ofomata who is the immediate Past President of Entrepreneurs Organization, Abuja charged the students to learn practical skills, commit to their passion, start little businesses even while in school in addition to their academics in order to  have a base after graduation, admonished the students  to create value instead of pursuing money.

Dr Ofomata who is currently the Global Mentorship Chairman of Entrepreneurs’ Organization explained that once one create value for the society, money will follow he or she naturally.

The founder of AMAECOM tasked the students to be patience in building their businesses from the scratch and from grass to grace just like he built his Amaecom brand from “an idea to significance”, hinting that the students have what it takes to make it in life considering their level of education and exposure to Information and Communication Technology (ICT) which has made research much easier compared to his early stage of business life.

Furthermore, he told the students that the best age to established a sustainable brand is in their youthfulness when responsibilities has not set in and charged them to get business  mentors who can motivate/nurture them, link them up to opportunities and practical know-how where necessary till their brands becomes sustainable.

Dr Ofomata who is also the Founder of a Non Governmental Organization - Marcel Ofomata Foundation decried the increasing dearth of many businesses due to the inability of their Founders to put up a business system that can outlive the first generation charged the UNN students and other entrepreneurs worldwide to intentionally plan a succession plan for their businesses.

He confirmed that if the students graduate out of school to grow their little businesses, that the rate of unemployment will reduce and they will also create value and opportunities for others which will consequently contribute to nation building.

Dr Amaechi Ofomata while sharing his business journey with the students said that he started his business by hawking spare parts of old motorcycles in low scale before making profits to the point of buying new Motorcycles from Innoson Motorcycle at Nnewi for his Customers.

He narrated how the business grew to the point  that he needed to rent a single store and thereafter went into manufacturing of most of the products his company is offering the Nigerian and International market.

In his testimony to motivate the students, Dr Ofomata stated that today his company has created over Five Hundred Direct employment within and outside Nigeria and numerous downstream opportunities.

Ofomata, added that the brand has manufactured many products on it brand name including Amaecom Motorcycles, Generators, Refrigerators, Gass Cookers, Tricycles, Pressing Iron, Water Dispensers, Mattrass/Pillows, Roofing Sheets, Crystals, Steel Doors.

Amaecom as a company currently has 31 branches in Nigeria with a branch at Ghana, Cameroon and offshore factory at China.
and that the company has evolved from ONE brand to a conglomerate having SIX Companies and still counting including: (a) Amaecom Asset Finance (b) Fabric Mobility and Logistics (c) Royal Citadel Housing Homes (d) Mitchell and Michelle Business School/Enterprise Hub (e) Trading Company (f) Marcel Ofomata Foundation as a Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and Special Purpose Vehicle for Community/ National development.

Ibom Chronicle business correspondent reported that after his presentation, the Chairman of Amaecom Group, Dr. Amaechi Ofomata was later presented with a DISTINGUISHED ENTREPRENEUR AWARD in recognition of his outstanding entrepreneurship achievements by the Centre for Entrepreneurship and Development Research (CEDR), University of Nigeria - Nsukka at Ekpo Convocation Park, venue of the event. Snake Chase Ondo Assembly Lawmakers Out of Plenary

Chaos broke out at the Ondo State House of Assembly Complex on Thursday following the appearance of three snakes at the hallowed chamber of the Assembly complex. The snakes reportedly fell from the ceiling of the hallowed chamber during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Rt Hon. Bamidele Oleyelogun.

The situation which caused panic among the lawmakers brought the plenary to an abrupt end as they hurriedly rushed out from the chamber. According to an eyewitness who is a staff of the Assembly, she disclosed that the complex has for a long while being left unattended to.

She also revealed that due to deplorable condition of facilities at the complex, snakes freely enter lawmakers’ offices and the hallowed chamber. She further revealed how on Wednesday afternoon (yesterday), a mysterious snake in one of the offices caused mild drama and apprehension at the Assembly complex when it pursued a lawmaker out of his office.

“Today three snakes fell from the Chamber’s roof when the sitting was about to commence and this made all the lawmakers to run for dear lives.”The snakes escaped from the scene, some of the lawmakers were shaking as if they wanted to die.”

“I can’t remember the last time this complex was fumigated. Everywhere around is just too dirty that sometimes one begins to wonder how lawmakers cope and sit in such dirty environment.”

Meanwhile, due to the tension created by the snakes, the Speaker declared that the house should proceed on indefinite recess as their security could not be guaranteed as a result of the ugly development.

AKHA Suspends Abak Council Chairman Over Alleged Assault On Artisan

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly today suspended the chairman of Abak local government area of the state, Barr. Imoh Williams, indefinitely after he allegedly assaulted an artisan, Mr Godwin Abraham, from the area.

Giving the verdict during an emergency plenary convened to launch investigation on the matter, the speaker of the house, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Bassey, ordered the vice chairman of the council, Mrs. Benita Ukpe, to take over as acting-chairman with immediate effect pending when probe on the case is concluded.
It will b recall that in a video that circulated online recently, some men said to have acted at the instance of the embattled chairman, were seen whipping one Mr. Godwin Abraham, who earlier had confronted the chairman for refusing to pay him the sum of N75,000, a fee for a decoration service he had rendered to him about two years ago.
A source close to the suspended council head who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Abraham was invited by the chairman’s loyalists in April this year to the council secretariat where he was beaten for taking to social media to “insult” the chairman for not paying him the said amount.
“That video was made to prove to the chairman that the job was done. I think the chairman refused to settle the person that made that video and he had to leak it,” the source said.
But bothered by public outcry against the development, the state governor, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, on Wednesday had condemned the act, describing it as unacceptable, one that negates the core values of the state.
“I roundly condemn the assault that took place at Abak Local Government Council, currently circulating on the social media. Such actions are unacceptable in a civilized society and does not represent our core values in the state,” he noted.
Emmanuel, however, had advised the state house of assembly, which was hitherto on recess, to reconvene and begin full investigations on the matter.
During the emergency plenary earlier today, member representing Ikot Abasi/Eastern Obolo state constituency, Rt. Hon. Uduak Odudoh, brought the case to the House as matter of urgent Importance. He prayed the house to suspend the erring chairman while investigations are ongoing.
Also speaking, member representing Ibesikpo Asutan State constituency, Rt. Hon. Aniekan Uko, who described the assembly as one that is a voice to ordinary citizens of the state, called on the security agencies to wade in on the matter to help fast-track the investigations.
However, member representing Esit Eket/Ibeno State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Usoro Akpanusoh, suggested that the embattled chairman be given a fair hearing in the course of the investigation.

How Deputy Police Commissioner, 11Civilians Were Killed In Shi'ites Protest

How DCP, 11 Civilians Were Killed as Shi’ites’ Protest Turned Bloody

Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, DCP Usman Umar, was among those killed yesterday in Abuja during a violent protest by Shi’ites.

A journalist with the Channels Television, Precious Owolabi, who was shot during the protest was later confirmed dead at the hospital.

Eleven members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) otherwise called Shi’ites were reportedly killed while 30 others were wounded in the bloody encounter.

The Shi’ites were protesting the continued incarceration of their leader, Sheik Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.

Umar was shot while trying to prevent the protesters from their mass action of destruction of property within the vicinity of the protest.

The DCP was immediately rushed to the hospital, but died moments later while receiving treatment.

Also, two Assistant Superintendents of Police (ASPs) sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment.

The fracas, which lasted for about two hours, witnessed sporadic shootings, forcing motorists to make quick detours and passers-by to scamper for safety. The incident paralysed business activities within the Federal Secretariat Complex as well as across the Three Arms Zone of the capital city.

In the ensuing melee, some vehicles stationed at the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) emergency outpost overlooking the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, were set ablaze. There were also reports of sporadic gunshots around the Bolingo Hotel and Area 10 axis of the capital city.

The fracas occurred barely two weeks after a similar encounter left many policemen injured, after the adamant Shi’ites breached security barricades and invaded the National Assembly.

El-Zakzaky and his wife have been in “protective custody” since December 2015 despite court rulings ordering their release.

The Inspector-General of Police (IG), Mohammed Adamu, condemned the protest and warned that the Force would no longer tolerate the activities of the group, declaring ‘enough is enough’.

Adamu, who commiserated with the family of the murdered police officer, warned that Nigeria would not continue to suffer losses on account of reckless and lawless persons and groups in the society.

The Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), Frank Mba, disclosed in a statement that yesterday’s protest involved over 3,000 IMN members, who stormed the streets at about 12:30p.m.

The FPRO said the “heavily armed protesters defied all sense of decency and violently attacked” innocent citizens and police personnel on duty along the route.

He said: “In the process, the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations, FCT Command, DCP Usman A. K. Umar, was shot and fatally injured by the protesters. The officer, who was immediately rushed to the hospital, died moments later while receiving treatment. Also, two Assistant Superintendents of Police and a journalist with the Channels Television sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving treatment.

“The violent protesters also razed down a NEMA Response Post close to the Federal Secretariat, Abuja and two vehicles.”

Mba confirmed that the police had arrested 54 suspects in connection with the incidents, adding that the suspects were undergoing interrogation and would be arraigned as soon as possible.

Similarly, NEMA has accused IMN members of burning down two vehicles at its Emergency Response and Ambulance Bays (ERABs) in Abuja.

Head of Media and Public Relations of NEMA, Malam Sani Datti, made this known in a statement in Abuja.

He said: “This is to confirm that ERABs of the NEMA located on Ahmadu Bello Way beside the Federal Secretariat was attacked today (yesterday) with two vehicles burnt down.

“The attack was carried out by members of Islamic Movement of Nigeria commonly known as Shi’ites.”

Datti explained that the affected vehicles were the Mobile Intensive Care Unit, which was a life support ambulance, and a multi-purpose Response Intervention van.

He said the ERABs were situated at the location for timely response to emergencies and disasters to reduce loss of lives and property.

The NEMA Director-General (DG), Alhaji Mustapha Maihaja, had while inspecting the damage, noted that the burnt equipment were very expensive and would cost taxpayers a lot of money to replace.

However, the spokesperson of the Shi’ites, Ibrahim Musa, who confirmed the clash in a phone interview with one of our correspondents, alleged that six of their members were killed by security operatives while a truckload of those injured were taken away by the police to an unknown destination.

But in a statement later, Musa said 11 IMN members were killed.

According to Musa, trouble started for his group while they were on their routine daily procession to demand the release of their leader and other detained members.

He said the procession, which commenced at the popular NICON Junction, Maitama District, Abuja was headed towards the Central Business District when security operatives confronted them at NITEL Junction, Wuse 2.

Musa also denied that their members attacked the police with arms and also burnt the NEMA facilities.

He, however, vowed that not even the killing of their members by security agencies would stop the protest and demand of the release of El-Zakzaky, his wife and other members who were still being held by the state.

He said: “The procession, attended by several thousands of persons, including very young children, the aged, women and the physically-challenged, met with an extreme rage indicative of deep seated animosity the Nigerian authorities bear for the movement.

“What actually happened was that the protesters started the procession from NITEL junction and on getting to Federal Secretariat, the police cordoned off the road and started firing at them.

“A lot of people have been shot but for now we can only confirm 11 deaths, but several are injured, the figure for now stood at 30. Though we are aware of the fact that the security agents have been going around taking off those they killed from the streets.

“Even some seriously injured persons that were taken to Abuja University Teaching Hospital, Gwagwalada; the police went there and took away about 11 people they shot during the protest.

“We strongly dispute the claim by the police that the protesters shot at them because throughout our processions we have not been carrying any arms right from 2015 to date.

“It was also the police who shot at the reporter of Channels TV, another indication that many innocent people were shot at by the police, including some of their own.

“In this era of social media, the brutality displayed by the police today has been captured with some pictures showing the police setting up the bonfires and there are videos that captured the police carting away their victims.”

Meanwhile, Channels Television announced the death of its reporter, Precious Owolabi, shot during the protest.

In its news bulletin, Tonight at 10, the station said Owolabi was hit by a stray bullet during the protest.

Pumps In Akwa Ibom As Akwa Starlets Gain Promotion To NPFL

Akwa Starlets despatch Shooting into stars to secure historic premier league promotion

By Edidiong STEPHEN

Akwa Starlets earned themselves a first-in-history elite division promotion after a domineering yet embarrassing 3-0 despatch of Nigerian football household name, Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan.

The match, which was one of four one-off NNL end-of-season promotion playoff, was played before a vociferous capacity crowd at Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba, Monday.

Shooting Stars finished top of Group B1 while Starlets emerged winners of Group B2 in the regular NNL season to book a playoff berth.

Femi Ajayi capitalized on a poor defensive zonal marking in the opposition box in the nineteenth minute to head home and opened the flood gates from an Imoh Obot corner kick.

Five minutes later, while Shooting were still seeing stars the bulky forward took his season's tally to six when he combined well with Spencer Bassey to elude his marker before unleashing a ferocious pile-driver with his weaker left foot from just outside the box and send the baying crowd into frenzy - his second of the pulsating encounter.

The icing on a hugely tasty cake was the best of the pick when the undoubted discovery of the season, Isaac George, combined speed, agility, guile and impeccable accuracy to score from 45 yards which caught goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh admiring its trajectory all the way in.

With three minutes left on the clock Starlets then resorted to entertaining the crowd with swashbuckling and mind-boggling interchange of accurate passes to kill off what of left of a pretty one-sided match.

The blast of the referee's whistle, after an additional five agonizing minutes, then put Shooting Stars out of their misery and confirmed Starlets' new NPFL status.

Elsewhere, Adamawa United and Jigawa Golden Stars made sure there wouldn't be any top flight football in the Nation's capital, Abuja, when they defeated both FRSC FC and NAF FC in that order while Warri Wolves needed penalties to see off the challenge of Dynamite FC of Iyamo.

All of Akwa Starlets, Warri Wolves, Adamawa United and Jigawa Golden Stars will now be involved in the NNL Super-4 tournament to decide the overall Champions of the NNL from August 31 in Asaba.

NNL Playoff
Monday, July 22, 2019.

Shooting Stars 0-3 Akwa Starlets
NAF FC 2-3 Jigawa Golden Stars
FRSC FC 1-2 Adamawa United

Senegalese Coach, Cisse Makes Case For African Coaches

Senegalese coach, Cisse Makes Case For African Coaches

Senegalese Football Leaders wanted white people who were asking for a lot of money.

I went to beg el hadji diouf and some former footballers to go ask the government to recruit me. But, it was difficult because the minister wanted alain giresse (French) who was asking for millions of francs.

After long weeks of discussions with the French without agreement, the minister invited me to his office and I seized the opportunity to tell him: ' I don't run after the million just allow me to serve my country.

Today I beat more than 9 Great European coaches to épuis the playoffs to arrive in the final.

God also allowed me to beat alain giresse .today i want to ask African leaders to give their brothers the chance instead of spending the time running behind white people.

Hughie Fury Defeats Injured Sam Peter By TKO In Foul-Filled Fight

By Keith Idec

Samuel Peter probably should’ve been disqualified Friday for continuously fouling Hughie Fury.

Eventually, however, the former WBC heavyweight champion claimed he couldn’t continue due to a shoulder injury during the seventh round of their scheduled 12-round fight in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Peter appeared to tell referee Ingo Barrabas that Fury injured him by holding his left arm in a clinch, but Barrabas didn’t penalize Fury.

Barrabas gave Peter time to recover, but the 38-year-old Peter kept pointing to his left arm and indicated he couldn’t use it. When he wasn’t fouling Fury, the shorter, slower, heavier Peter mostly missed wild shots and had difficulty dealing with Fury’s jab and movement.

The 24-year-old Fury (23-2, 13 KOs), a cousin of lineal heavyweight champ Tyson Fury, recorded an unsatisfying victory in a foul-filled fight on the Amir Khan-Billy Dib undercard at King Abdullah Sports Complex. The Nigerian-born, Las Vegas-based Peter (38-8, 31 KOs) is 2-3 in his past five fights.

The round before their fight ended, Peter hit Fury with another low right hand that forced Barrabas to give Fury time to recover with 1:14 to go in the sixth round.

Fury mocked Peter late in the fifth round for swinging wildly and missing with a right hand. Earlier in the fifth, Barrabas warned Peter yet again for hitting Fury with a low blow and then back-to-back rabbit punches while Barrabas was trying to separate them.

Barrabas deducted a point from Peter with 1:37 to go in the fourth round for landing a clubbing left hand to the side of Fury’s head while he was breaking them up. In the final minute and 10 seconds of the fourth, Fury landed two crisp, left-right combinations.

Peter hit Fury with a low blow that caused a brief break with 21 seconds to go in the third round. He was warned about 25 seconds earlier for hitting Fury behind his head.

Fury continued dictating distance during the second round by using his jab and moving out of Peter’s punching range. Fury landed a chopping right hand to the side of Peter’s head just after the halfway mark of the second round, too.

Fury was cautious in the first round, as he tried to keep his distance from the powerful Peter. He tied up Peter a couple times as Peter plowed forward and attempted to rough up Fury.

FIBA U 16 Championship : Nigeria Shift Focus To Angola

FIBA U-16 African Championship: Nigeria shift focus to Angola

Nigeria’s U-16 basketball team Head Coach, Fubara Onyanabo, is not carried away by the massive victory against host- Cape Verde after securing a 64-39 points win at the FIBA U-16 African Championship.

Fubara said all attention has now been shifted to their third game on Tuesday against Angola who had earlier lost to 3 time Champions, Egypt by 61-86 points.

The coach praised his boys for playing to instruction which gave them the massive victory which he said has boosted their confidence ahead of the game against Angola.

After the loss to Egypt, the boys bounced back to pull off a win in front of the intimidating home fans as Reuben Abuchi Chinyelu posted a double-double performance, coming off the bench to score 20 points and 21 rebounds.

James Othuke Okemerie was the second best scorer of the night with 12 points while Bormini Victor Dennis contributed 8 points and 2 assists.

The Port Harcourt based coach said the tactics to be adopted will be uniquely tailored to the opposition while assuring Nigeria of an improved performance by the lads when they file out for their third game at the ongoing FIBA u-16 African Championship campaign.

“Everything depends on the strength and quality of the opposition. The Cape Verdeans are not too tall and strong, while against Egypt, we were out rebounded both offensively and defensively but against Cape Verde, it was different.

“We are going to adopt a different strategy against Angola. We are coming to the court and we are not going to respect anybody because we are all here to ball”, Fubara said.

Having admitted that the journey to the final seems far, Fubara said the only way to appreciate the Nigeria Basketball Federation is to qualify for the 2019 FIBA Under-17 World Championship in Bulgaria.

“As you are aware, the last time we took part in this competition was in 2015. For the NBBF to bring us here means we are here for serious business. We are here to qualify for the World Cup”.

Christian Ifeanyi shatters Record In Tunisia Para-Athletics Grand Prix

It has been a longer journey that one might have expected for Ifeanyi Christian to represent the nation, despite being the fastest in Nigeria in 100m, 200m & 400m in the T46 Category (for single arm amputees) for quite some time now.

At National Trials for the Commonwealth Games in Abuja in 2017, he won all three events, in times of 11.50s, 23.10s and 51.24s respectively, but he was inexplicably left out of the team to Australia, where the Athlete who placed 2nd in the T46 100m at the Trials won the Commonwealth Games Gold Medal.

At that point, it was clear to me that Ifeanyi would be a serious medal contender for Nigeria at the World Para-Athletics Championships and the Paralympic Games, if only he could get the opportunity to compete annually on the World Para-Athletics Grand Prix circuit to qualify for those major global competitions. And what if we were able to provide him the same level of support as our other Athletes at Making of Champions (MoC) Track Club – how much faster could he go?

Every year I’ve known Ifeanyi, he had always talked about travelling abroad for one of the several annual World Para-Athletics Grand Prix Meets, but it never came to fruition as each time, the Para-Athletic Federation of Nigeria (PAFN) was unable to source the funding needed to make the trips. In fact, it wasn’t until he joined MoC this year that got on a plane for the very first time – we flew him to Enugu for the Para-Athletics Championships in April, where he once again swept all his events.

Thankfully, his story is one of delay and not denial. After winning all his events again at the Para-Athletics National Trials in Lagos in May, he was selected by the PAFN on a team of 4 Para-Athletes and 5 Officials for the World Para-Athletics Grand Prix in Tunisia at the end of June. After years of dashed hopes, Ifeanyi finally left the shores of Nigeria for the first time, as the PAFN was finally able to source the funds needed to attend a World Para-Athletics Grand Prix competition!

Ifeanyi won an unprecedented 3 Gold Medals in the T46/T47 100m, 200m & 400m in Tunis, in times of 11.04s, 22.20s and 49.56s respectively, automatically ranking him in the Top 5 in the world in all three events, and qualifying him for both the World Para-Athletics Championships and the Paralympic Games.

In the T46 category alone, he’s No. 2 in the world this year in the 200m (T46 is for above the elbow amputees, with a higher level of impairment than T47 Athletes – below the elbow)

He’s not far away from the T46/47 African Record in all 3 events (10.72s, 21.83s & 49.21s), and with the right support to compete regularly on the World Para-Athletics circuit from now until the Paralympics next year, who knows whether he could even attack the T46/47 World Records (10.50s, 21.10s, 47.69s) and win Paralympic Gold?

It won’t be easy, but it’s not possible to be the best that ever lived in anything without the necessary self-belief, and a village of people behind you giving you the support needed to dare challenge the best in the world!

Senator Adeleke Lose To Oyetola In Supreme Court

Supreme Court Affirms Oyetola as Osun State Governor

The Supreme Court on Friday Affirmed the candidate of the All Progressives Congress ( APC ), Gboyega Oyetola as the governor of Osun state.

Five of the seven judges on the panel were in favour of Oyetola, leaving senator Adeleke with just two

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had declared Oyetola winner of the Osun governorship election after a controversial rerun in September 2018.

Dissatisfied with INEC’s declaration, Ademola Adeleke, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, filed a petition against at the tribunal.

The tribunal declared Adeleke winner of the election in March. Gboyega appealed the verdict of the tribunal.

In May, the appeal court gave judgement in favour of the APC candidate.

Congratulations Governor Gboyega Oyetola
